Bachelor and Master in Helsinki ("SAT Reasoning Test Admission")

Admission to take both the Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the Helsinki Business Campus

About 300 students are admitted annually to the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree. Admission is mainly based on an entrance exam (only in Finnish) and the grades in the nationwide matriculation examination. For non-Finnish speakers it is possible to gain admission to Aalto University School of Economics through SAT Reasoning Test, taken in English. The admitted students take first the Bachelor's degree and have then automatically the right to continue taking the Master's.

The bachelor-level education of Aalto University School of Economics Helsinki Campus will be transferred to the Otaniemi main campus in 2015. More information can be found here. (into.aalto.fi)

General Eligibility to Apply

In order to be eligible to apply, applicants have to have finished upper secondary school and to be eligible for university-level studies in their own country. An applicant must fulfill the formal eligibility requirement for admission to the Bachelor’s studies as defined in the Finnish Universities Act (558/2009). An applicant can show this eligibility, for example, with such secondary education which gives an applicant eligibility for university studies in the applicant’s own home country (e.g. Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate, High School Diploma or its equivalent, International Baccalaureate Diploma, European Baccalaureate Diploma, Vocational College Diploma (minimum 3 years), Reifeprüfung Diploma, Community College Diploma equivalent to an Associate of Arts Degree or A University or College Diploma equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree or higher).

Study Right and Possibilities to Study in English

It is possible to take the whole degree in English. There are currently three Bachelor's degree programs that can be completed in English: Business Technology, Finance and Economics. When admitted via SAT Reasoning Test, new students start by studying towards the Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree (regardless of the student’s background). On completion of that, the students can continue studying for the Master’s degree. The students will choose a preferred Master's degree program when taking the Bachelor's diploma. There are currently twelve Master's degree programs offered in English. See the link for the possibilities to study in English on the bottom of the page.

Sat Reasoning Test - Report and Results

SAT Reasoning Test is given by an organization founded by universities and colleges for the purpose of assisting the admission officers in student selection: to help them compare the academic achievements of students from different schools. SAT Reasoning Test is taken in English. It can be taken world wide. For more information on SAT Reasoning Test, see the Admission Guide and www.collegeboard.com.

The score reports of the test are mailed to the home address of the test taker about five weeks after the test. The test taker himself/herself requests that the score reports are to be sent directly to universities – it is possible to choose 4 universities without any extra cost. Aalto University School of Economics expects to get the test report directly from the test organizer. The code number is 1700 (same as for former HSE). Please enter this code on the registration form.

For the procedure in 2012, SAT Reasoning Test must have been taken in January 2010 or later. The report is to reach Aalto University School of Economics by 14 June 2012 at the latest. Please note that SAT Reasoning Test is only administered on certain dates, and to take it, one must be registered by a certain date as well. The registration date is extremely important. In order to guarantee that the results will reach us by 14 June 2012, SAT Reasoning Test should be taken no later than on 5 May 2012, for which one must register no later than by 6 April 2012. It is possible for the applicant to print the test score report at www.collegeboard.com. If the applicant wishes, (s)he may inform the Office of Studies and Registrar, study-econ(at)aalto.fi, about the user name and password to his/her collegeboard.com account so that our officer can try to print the report out. This is recommended. If the applicant prints out the report himself/herself, it cannot be considered.

Admission Process and Admission Quota in SAT Reasoning Test Admission

The selection is based on the SAT Reasoning Test score. In general, SAT Reasoning Test score qualifies applicants for the degree programs in English. SAT Reasoning Test consists of three sections: Writing, Mathematics, and Critical Reading. To be eligible to apply via SAT, applicants must:

  • fulfill the general eligibility to apply to university level studies AND
  • have a score of at least 500 in Writing section AND
  • have a score of at least 1050 in Mathematics and Critical Reading sections together (minimum requirement, see also statistics).

SAT Reasoning Test is considered as a whole. Thus, the above-mentioned minimum scores need to be achieved in the same SAT Reasoning Test. Scores of the sections from several SAT Reasoning Tests cannot be combined.

The admission process takes place among the applicants who fulfill the criteria for eligibility to apply mentioned above. In 2012 altogether a maximum of 38 new students with the best results will be admitted to Aalto University School of Economics Helsinki Campus on the basis of SAT Reasoning Test in the following two admission groups:

A) 15 new students are admitted of those, who have taken one of the following high school degrees:

  • Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Reifeprüfung Diploma
  • European Baccalaureate Diploma.

The selection of students is based on the order of the applicants’ total scores in the Mathematics and Critical Reading sections together. If there is more than one applicant with the same total score, the applicant with the better test score in the Mathematics section will be admitted. If the applicants’ points are still equal (on place 15), they will all be admitted. However, the maximum number of the students admitted cannot be any higher than 18. In such case, less than 15 would be admitted.

B) 23 new students are admitted of those, who have not taken any of the above mentioned high school degrees, but fulfill the general eligibility to apply. In addition to SAT Reasoning Test score, also consideration may be used in this admission group. However, the above-mentioned three minimum requirements of eligibility to apply also apply to the admission group B. Consideration is based on the application form and its enclosures. The following may be taken into account: SAT Reasoning Test score of Mathematics and Critical Reading sections together, applicant’s previous studies, applicant’s motivation to business studies and taking the degree at Aalto University School of Economics. For school to assess applicant’s motivation, the applicant must write a short (maximum of one page) statement on why (s)he wishes to study at the Aalto University School of Economics. Certified copies of relevant diplomas must also be delivered. Instructions on enclosures are given when filling out the application form.
