Who can apply?
The Master's Degree Programme in Applied Art and Design is intended for graduates of a Bachelor’s degree in design and others with equivalent basic skills in design.
Description of the degree programme
The Applied Art and Design studies include design projects, some of them international, related to living, interior design, functional objects and unique pieces. The degree programme is characterised by multidisciplinary group work and internationality. The main teaching methods are projects and studio work, which are meant to develop the students’ ability to react to changes in the society and in consumers’ needs. The aim is also to develop the students’ conceptual and research skills in producing and applying the necessary information.
Objectives of the programme
The Master’s Degree Programme in Applied Art and Design deepens the design skills acquired by students at Bachelor’s degree level and teaches students to set objectives for their design efforts into a wider cultural, business and product development context.
The programme aims to prepare students to work independently as design professionals in the fields of culture, art promotion and concept marketing. Graduates are ready to take doctoral (Doctor of Art) studies. Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree in Ceramic and Glass Design can take this Master’s Degree Programme to increase their professional competence and material knowledge in their field, as a basis e.g. for research work.
Programme structure
This is a two-year, 120 ECTS Master’s degree programme. The basic framework of the programme consists of the shared studies common to all Master’s Degree Programmes
in Department of Design, the degree programme’s own studies, minor studies and the thesis. Some courses are organised in periods. The main teaching methods are projects and studio work, which are meant to develop the students’ ability to react to changes in the society and in consumers’ needs. The aim is also to develop the students’ conceptual and research skills in producing and applying the necessary information. The most important element of the programme is the independent Master’s thesis (40 ECTS), which helps students identify the personal strengths on which they can build their professional profiles and careers.
Course languages
The degree programme’s courses can be completed in Finnish, Swedish or English.
Employment prospects
Graduates can work as industrial designers, artists, independent entrepreneurs, researchers or teachers.
Evaluation criteria in applicant selection
Ability to come up with creative design solutions, ideation ability, target-orientedness and motivation.
