Who can apply
The prerequisite for admission is a Bachelor’s degree in the related field or equivalent skills and knowledge.
Description of the degree programme
The Master’s Degree Programme in Furniture Design looks in depth at technically, aesthetically and environmentally sustainable and visionary furnishing entities, as well as contemporary methods in design.
Objectives of the programme
The aim is to provide in-depth knowledge and skills in furniture design. The education emphasises the students’ analytical and innovative ability to solve demanding problems in
furniture design. Graduates are designers who can combine social needs, responsibility, creative interpretations of the aesthetics of the day and skilled use of production techniques in their work.
Structure of the programme
Studies are full-time. The main work format consists of extensive, independent assignments and related guidance and critiques, as well as research studies, lectures and field trips.
Course languages
Finnish. Some lectures and workshops are in English, and personal guidance can be received in English. International students can complete the degree in English.
Employment prospects
Graduates can find work as independent entrepreneurs, in design studios or in the production industry.
Evaluation criteria in applicant selection
Ability to visualise spaces and structures, personal and artistic vision, motivation.
Selection process
Students are selected on the basis of a portfolio and the preliminary assignments.
Preliminary assignments
All applicants for Master's Degree Programme in Furniture Design must submit all the preliminary assignments listed below with their application:
1. Fork, knife, spoon
Plan a cutlery set: a fork, a knife and a spoon.
Execution
Present the work drawings of your design on a scale of 1:1 on one A3-sized sheet of paper.
Principles of evaluation
Functionality, the harmony of material and form, beauty.
2. Artist’s impression
Present a picture of your hand using one of the pieces of cutlery you designed.
Execution
A freehand drawing or painting on an A3-sized sheet of paper.
Principles of evaluation
Visual expression, composition, use of colour and atmosphere.
On the back of each assingnment you must write :
1. Your last name
2. All first names
3. Date of birth
4. Master Degree Programme's name
5. Assignment's number
