Aalto Univeristy Programs in Technology

Technology

The Aalto University offers more than 30 programmes in English that lead to an internationally recognised degrees of MSc in Technology, Architecture or Landscape Architecture.

The scope of the degree covers 120 credits (ECTS), including a 30-credit thesis. The education provided in the degree programs is organized so as to allow students to earn approximately 60 credits in one academic year and to earn a master’s degree in two years. Doctoral degrees are also offered (Doctor of Science). The only languages of instruction in bachelor’s programs are Finnish and Swedish. Master's Programmes

There are twenty Master’s programmes that are mainly targeted for international students who have completed a Bachelor's level degree abroad. They are offered completely in English and they lead to a Master of Science degree.

The Aalto University four Schools of Technology participate in five Erasmus Mundus Programmes.

Degree programmes

The Aalto University four Schools of Technology offer nineteen degree programmes leading to a Master’s degree. Most of these degree programmes are offered mainly in Finnish/Swedish and are 5-year programmes. However, some of the subjects are available in English and only for a duration of Master's studies (2 yrs). Degree programmes that have been offered in English during the 2011 application round are listed below. Please note, that major subjects available in English are decided each year separately.

Nordic Master Programmes

The Aalto University four Schools of Technology participate in Nordic Five Tech alliance, which currently offers two jointly organized Nordic Master Programmes.

 


Master's Programmes

  • Bioinformatics (MBI)
    MBI programme offers a unique combination of bioinformatics, methodological sciences, biosciences and medicine.
  • Bioproduct Technology
    The most important objective of the programme is to train professionals who can utilize biomass in an economically and ecologically sustainable manner and.
  • Brain and Mind
    This new programme emphasizes multidisciplinary understanding of mind from various perspectives, such as neuroscience, computational analysis and modelling, psychology, sociology, physics, and culture.
  • Communications Ecosystem
    Programme in Communications Ecosystem covers areas ranging from technology to the business aspects of communications networks and services.
  • Communications Engineering
    Programme in Communications Engineering focuses on the development of communications systems for the wireless and wired networks of the future.
  • Creative Sustainability
    The main aim of the programme is to develop competences and skills in the areas of project management, design, cross-disciplinary operations and activities, systematic sustainable design and sustainable business.
  • Electrical Engineering
    The programme provides the most up to date knowledge of electrical engineering research and business.
  • Foundations of Advanced Computing
    The programme provides the students with fundamental conceptual tools for the modelling, design, and analysis of advanced computing systems.
  • Geoinformatics
    Programme in Geoinformatics is technically and mathematically oriented and focuses mainly on spatial analysis and modelling methods.
  • International Design Business Management
    The IDBM program aims to train skilled professionals for key roles in global design business.
  • Machine Learning and Data Mining (Macadamia)
    Macadamia programme gives students fundamental expertise in some of the hottest topics in modern computational data analysis and data mining.
  • Managing Spatial Change
    Programme strives to enhance integration between housing, spatial planning, land use, transportation, industry and ecology.
  • Mechanical Engineering
    During programme students will receive technological education of the highest international standard in product development, mechanics of materials, digital design and manufacturing, mechatronics or innovative structural design.
  • Micro- and Nanotechnology
    This programme focuses on the technologies involved in the miniaturisation of electronic and optical devices.
  • Mobile Computing - Services and Security
    The courses in the programme address network applications, services, information security, and mobile networking from several aspects.
  • Physics of Advanced Materials
    The programme provides students with a strong education in the physics of materials from the viewpoint of present-day research with emphasis on either theoretical/computational or experimental aspects.
  • Process Systems Engineering (PSE)
    The studies in the Programme cover process control and automation, chemical engineering and plant design as well as computer science and industrial chemistry.
  • Radio Science and Engineering
    Programme in Radio Science and Engineering covers topics in radio science, electromagnetism, space technology, and circuit theory.
  • Real Estate Investment and Finance
    Programme strives to provide a Master’s degree of international standards and quality that give the students the required knowledge to work both in the fields of property market and financial intermediation.
  • Service Design and Engineering
    Enabling global information technology engineering, innovation and management.
  • Service Management and Engineering
    Programme provides students with the knowledge and skills required to become successful managers, developers, and buyers of services in a business-to-business context.
  • Strategy
    The goal of the programme is to train and develop experts in strategy, apt to thrive in today’s constantly changing and increasingly complex business environment.

Nordic Master's Programmes

  • Applied and Engineering Mathematics
    This double degree programme introduces you to the study of mathematics and problem solving in two Nordic universities.
  • Innovative and Sustainable Energy Engineering
    The purpose of the programme is to provide state-of-the-art education in the fields of conventional and renewable energy sources.
  • Maritime Engineering
    The program is based on the expertise of the participating universities within naval architecture, offshore engineering and maritime engineering.
  • Sustainable Urban Transitions
    The Nordic Master Programme in Sustainable Urban Transitions (NMP SUT) provides integrated knowledge development and capacity building to young professionals in the field sustainable urban transitions.

    The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures
  • Bioinformation Technology
    BioIT is a multidisciplinary programme where the teaching is organized in three different Aalto University engineering schools (School of Electrical Engineering, School of Science, School of Chemical Technology).
  • Engineering Physics and Mathematics
    The core skills of the Degree Programme of Engineering Physics and Mathematics are based on sound mathematical natural science training and its application to the rapidly changing problems of industrial and economic life.
  • Geomatics
    Geomatics observes and surveys land areas and the environment. Everything taught within the programme is related to the environment, its visualization and the application of gathered information.

Erasmus Mundus Programmes

EIT ICT Labs Master School

  • ICT Innovation
    This new double degree programme binds together solid technical courses in computer science and software engineering and business development skills.

The applicants for master's degree should fill in the on-line application form, available only during the application period 2 January - 15 February.

Studying Technology

In addition to lectures, a course may include problem-solving exercises, individual or group design work or laboratory work.
