Service Management and Engineering

Launch into the world of modern business and shape the service economy of tomorrow!

Services are increasingly important in modern societies. They contribute to productivity improvement and sustainable growth by enriching interactions between different participants. In a service economy, providers consider themselves partners in co-production. Service users have become service producers and content providers; service elements are added to products; service-based business models are adopted by manufacturers, and new innovative service concepts and systems are evolving.

The Master’s Programme in Service Management and Engineering (SeM) is an excellent choice for those interested in creating new kinds of management solutions in a business-to-business environment. Students will learn how to plan and implement production of services systems, with emphasis on combining service with the product of the production system.

The programme is organised by the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (DIEM). DIEM carries out research in close cooperation with industry and thus combines academic rigour and practical relevance in its research and education. Cooperation partners include Nokia, Metso, and IBM, as well as healthcare service providers, such as the Helsinki University Central Hospital and Kaiser Permanente. The research focuses on the interface between business and technology.

Daria Baryshnikova_SeM.jpg”I chose SeM because I liked the programme outlook and thought it would be useful for my career. Also, this programme was something new and interesting and very few universities in Europe had something similar at the time. Courses at Aalto usually combine theory and practice and include company visits and lectures by company representatives – a big advantage.” (Daria Baryshnikova, SeM student from Russia)
